Originally expected in 2025, fans will have to wait for Renny Harlin’s next shark adventure a while longer as Deep Water heads into cinemas in May 2026.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a proper good shark film. Renny Harlin is undoubtedly the godfather of the genre, thanks to his 1999 horrorfest Deep Blue Sea and the director is returning to shark action imminently
Harlin has been working on Deep Water, his next shark-adjacent film, for some time now and it was originally expected to hit cinemas in 2025, but Bloody Disgusting now reports that the film’s US distributor Magenta Light Studios is bringing the film to cinemas later than expected. Deep Water will now be in cinemas on 1st May 2026 and we’re hoping a UK release date will follow swiftly.
The film follows a group of people stranded in shark-infested waters after their plane has to make an emergency landing. Ben Kingsley and Aaron Eckhart lead the cast with Molly Wright, Angus Sampson, Li Wenham and Kelly Gale.
“Deep Water represents the kind of movie I’ve dreamed of making since I grew up loving the ’70s disaster movies. Spectacular action and unforgettable characters who didn’t leave a dry eye in the movie theater,” Harlin said of the film.
The director also described the film as the “ultimate shark film” to us last year and that certainly has our hopes up for Deep Water.
Before Harlin brings us more shark-related thrills, he’s got to get The Strangers: Chapter 2 out the door first. The sequel to last year’s slasher film, set in the same universe as Bryan Bertino’s 2008 original The Strangers, is the second in a planned trilogy.
Back in 1999, Deep Blue Sea revived the subgenre of the toothy sea creatures causing chaos after it died down in the 80s. The film includes many memorable death scenes and we’re hoping Deep Water will also get us squirming in our seats and avoiding the sea for a while.
