New sequels to Zootropolis, Toy Story and Frozen are on the way, Disney announces, although further details are sketchy.
When you’re in trouble, reach for the hits. That seems to be the mantra at Disney at the moment. Thus, mixed in with the announcement of job cuts and falling numbers at Disney+, the company has announced a trio of new sequels to a trio of its billion-dollar box office features.
The films in question are Frozen 3, Toy Story 5 and Zootropolis 2. Filmmaker details for each haven’t been released, nor do we know when to expect them. But perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that safer bets are being sought.
That said, there was a feeling Pixar was pushing its luck with Toy Story 4, and last year’s Lightyear spin-off was a flat-out disappointment. Likewise, whilst the second Frozen film did well, it felt a long way short of the first. Zootropolis – or Zootopia, if you’re in the States – does feel fresh for further exploration of that world.
No idea how long these have been in development, or if they were quickly banged onto the Powerpoint to offset the rest of the news. More updates on them all as we hear it…
