Dreams, Media Molecule’s creative sand box, will no longer receive live support after 1 September as focus shifts to an “exciting new project.”

Dreams, the multiple award-winning game creation platform from Media Molecule, will no longer receive live support after 1 September.

The news comes directly from the developer itself, in a news post recently shared on its website. “As we continue to evaluate and evolve our priorities for the studio and Dreams, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue live support for Dreams after 1st September, 2023 to shift our focus to an exciting new project,” the British studio wrote.

Media Molecule adds that users will still be able to make, play and share their creations after that date, but further update and events will cease. “We will continue to share and celebrate creations in Dreams with the wider world on our social channels, our streams, Impsider roundups and more,” the post continues. “We will be continuing our in-game curation work to make sure the Dreamiverse feels as alive as it always has been, and to surface amazing creations from you, our community, for everyone to enjoy.”

The same announcement post also talks a little bit about an upcoming server migration, which will also bring with it a few major changes, including 5GB storage limits and the removal of archiving as a feature.

Other elements are also set to be removed, including certain quests and trophies, Twitch integration, and the audio importer – though the studio says the latter feature will be restored in October.

Dreams was launched for PS4 in February 2020, and users quickly began to fill it up with their own imaginative, sometimes beautiful creations. One project that caught our eye last year was the atmospheric space exploration opus, Naut. Honestly, the scale and detail of what could be created using the platform was often astonishing.

Sadly, it looks as though Media Molecule will ultimately move on from the Dreams platform; while the studio won’t be drawn on what it’s working on next, the project evidently isn’t a successor to Dreams: “We can confirm that it is not Dreams 2, or the Dreams IP.”

“We’re very proud of Dreams and grateful for the way you, the community, have embraced all it has to offer,” Media Molecule wrote in a related FAQ. “Whilst we’ve always had the desire to build on the foundation of Dreams and expand the experience, when reviewing our plans we were not able to define a sustainable path. We made the decision to change the studio product strategy. This is obviously disappointing to many people inside and outside of Mm, however we are incredibly excited for what will come next.”
