We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is finally making her latest film, with filming now underway in Calgary, Canada.
Update 20th August 2024: Filming has now begun on Die, My Love, the fifth film from British director Lynne Ramsay. KFTV reports that production got underway in Calgary, Canada on the 19th August and will run until the 8th October. Starring Jennifer Lawrence (who also produces with Martin Scorsese), it’s said to be about “a woman driven tot he brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.” Robert Pattinson and LaKeith Stansfield also have major roles.
There’s no word on a release date yet, but 2025 seems likely; perhaps Ramsay will even have the film ready for the Canne Film Festival next May. We’ll bring you more as we get it.
Our original story from the 18th June follows…
The only bad thing about Lynne Ramsay’s films is that there aren’t enough of them. Over a 24 year career, she’s made just four features – all of them brilliant. Her most recent one, the hypnotically suspenseful You Were Never Really Here, was released in 2017.
It now sounds as though Ramsay’s next film is finally getting underway, with The Calgary Herald (via World Of reel) reporting that Die, My Love is due to begin shooting in the area this August.
About “a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood,” it’s based on the novel of the same name by Ariana Harwicz and will be produced by Martin Scorsese.
Die, My Love is one of several projects that Ramsay has been trying to get going in recent years. There was an adaptation of the Margaret Atwood novel, Stone Mattress, which had Julianne Moore and Sandra Oh attached in 2022. The was the drama Polaris, an original script written by Ramsay. It would have seen Ramsay collaborate again with Joaquin Phoenix, who brought a brawny, disturbing presence to You Were Never Really Here.
There was also talk of an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, which at one stage was said to be going into production in 2021.
To date, none of these have panned out, with Stone Mattress held up due to problems with filming at sea. “I’m going to shoot it soon, but it’s still to be confirmed,” Ramsay told Screen Daily last year. “With boats, it’s a logistical issue. I’ll never make a film in a boat again!”
Ramsay’s other films are Ratcatcher (1999), Morvern Callar (2002) and We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011). If there’s any justice, Die, My Love will be joining them within the next year or so.
