Gina Carano is taking Disney and Lucasfilm to court over her The Mandalorian removal – er, with Elon Musk’s help.

Elon Musk’s commitment to free speech, and to helping those who don’t have a voice, continues to take peculiar turns. Turns out that through whatever he now calls Twitter, his firm is helping Gina Carano fund a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm.

This goes back to Lucasfilm removing Gina Carano from the cast of the Star Wars television series The Mandalorian, where she drew a comparison between being a Republican in modern day America, and being Jewish during the Nazi holocaust. You can read more about her social media posts here.

Here’s her post about the death of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein too.

Elon Musk is keen to defend free speech, as he’s frequently posted, and his involvement with this particular case is surely nothing to do with the publicity it’ll generate, and which target it’s aimed at. We’re sure he’s also seeking out lots of under-the-radar cases where people who don’t have a voice and haven’t starred in films and TV shows can gain access to his funds.

Carano’s case against Disney and Lucasfilm claims that the firms “made it clear that only one orthodoxy in thought, speech, or action was acceptable in their empire, and that those who dared to question or failed to fully comply would not be tolerated”.

One fact that’s come out as part of the case: Carano was being paid just $25,000 per episode for her work on The Mandalorian. Sure, that’s a lot of money for most of us, but given the scale of the production, the size of the franchise, and the cash vaults of the company behind it? It seems on the tight side.

She is seeking $75,000 in damages. Presumably, every time Elon Musk farts, he generates that amount of money in interest.

On top of that, the less predictable punitive damages are also being claimed. Lord knows where that’ll end up should she win the case.

Carano has praised whatever Twitter’s called for backing her case. Disney as of yet has not commented. Carano’s reps are asking for a jury trial. This is going to make news for some time yet…
