Fast Forever’s latest update from Vin Diesel? Filming is now set to begin this December, ‘if I can make good on the request from the studio.’
Oh lord, how on earth do you begin to recap the story so far here? It’s now been three years since the release of Fast X, or Fast & Furious 10 if you prefer. It was a film designed to be the first in a two-part finale for the long-running saga, with Vin Diesel leading an ensemble cast again, along with some half-decent motors as well.
But! Fast X was a notably difficult production, running over budget, losing its director weeks before filming, and falling below expectations at the box office. Since then, through the power primarily of Vin Diesel’s social media platforms, there’s been a constant stream of updates on Fast Forever (as the last film is called), but no actual, well, film.
Earlier this year, there was the suggestion that filming had begun. Then it hadn’t. We’ve also had Vin Diesel in tears reading the best script he’s ever read, or something. And the sneaking suspicion that Diesel may be part of Universal’s reluctance to press ahead with the film.
But, but, but! On the one hand, we learn that the plan is now to start shooting in December. On the other hand, the source of the news is not the most reliable where Fast Whenever news has been concerned: Vin Diesel.
At a 25th anniversary screening of the original film over the weekend, he’s now insisted to Variety that “we start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio.”
What the request from the studio is remains unclear. A few suggestions spring to mind.
Diesel also told the outlet that “I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale”, repeating too that he cried when he read the latest draft.
It does, when he describes things like that, make it sound like he’s the driving force behind the saga, and maybe he is. But also, it’s fairly well known that Universal wanted the budget down too, and evidently has the final say here.
The release date remains 17th March 2028, and the theory is that Louis Leterrier, who hasn’t yet read the emotional script as of a week or two ago, is directing.
Still can’t help that the saga is far from done in more than one sense here. Will keep you posted with more as we get it…
