The first authorised documentary on Andy Kaufman is on the way, and first details of the project are here.

Andy Kaufman is considered by many to be one of the most influential comic performers in American culture. Best known for his performances on Saturday Night Live and his role as Latka Gravas on the sitcom  Taxi, Kaufman didn’t call himself a comedian, once saying in an interview “I am not a comic, I have never told a joke. The comedian’s promise is that he will go out there and make you laugh with him. My only promise is that I will try to entertain you as best I can”

Kaufman died of lung cancer in 1984. Jim Carrey won a Golden Globe award for his performance as Kaufman in 1999’s Man On The Moon.

The first officially authorised documentary has been greenlit.

Clay Tweel will direct. The film is endorsed by The Andy Kaufman Estate, who are co-producing. The film will also show hitherto unseen footage, photographs and documents from the archive of Kaufman’s manager George Shapiro.

We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
