An evocative first trailer has landed for Sam Mendes’ Empire Of Light – which is due for release early next year.

The first trailer has arrived for Empire Of Light, Sam Mendes’ next project following the hugely successful 1917. Empire Of Light sees the director reunite with regular collaborator Roger Deakins as cinematographer. This marks the fifth pairing of Mendes and Deakins, following JarheadRevolutionary Road and Skyfall, as well as the aforementioned 1917.

Also featuring in Empire Of Light will be Olivia Colman, who will take the lead in the project. The talents of Micheal Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke, Tom Brooke, Hannah Onslow and Tanya Moodie will also be on display. The film, which was announced back in April of 2021 is described as ‘a love story, set in and around a beautiful old cinema, on the South Coast of England in the 1980s.’

Searchlight Pictures are distributing the film, whilst Empire Of Light marks Mendes’ first outing as a solo writer on a project. Principal photography took place in February this year with the film being slated to release in January of 2023. Until then, you can get your first look below. This writer certainly didn’t realise how much his morning would benefit from hearing Toby Jones sagely describe the power of cinema until he took a minute to watch it. It was a tingly moment and next January can’t come quickly enough. Here’s that trailer.
