Update: Good news for anyone following the progress of Panos Cosmatos’ 1980s-set vampire film, Flesh Of The Gods. Roughly two years after it was announced, the latest movie from the maker of Mandy has begun filming in Spain.

It has a starry cast, including Kristen Stewart, Wagner Moura and Elizabeth Olsen. Moura replaced Oscar Isaac earlier this year due to conflicting schedules.

Speaking of schedules, the shoot is set to take in the picturesque Canary Islands before switching to Cologne in Germany for its second half (per Deadline). The plot’s set in Los Angeles, so there’ll be some cunning use of locations to make Europe look like La-La Land.

There’s no release date as yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Flesh Of The Gods materialised in about a year. We’ll keep you posted.

Our original story follows…

2nd April 2026: Announced in 2024, Flesh Of The Gods is the latest film from Panos Cosmatos, director of the trippy, bloody genre delights Beyond The Black Rainbow (2010) and Mandy (2018).

The last we heard, the new Cosmatos joint was set to star Kristen Stewart, Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac. Since then, however, there’s been a slight amendment to the line-up: Oscar Isaac is out and Wagner Moura, who recently got an Oscar nomination for his work in The Secret Agent, is now in.

According to Deadline, which first broke the story, Isaac was compelled to leave the production due to a scheduling conflict.

This means Isaac will be missing out on what sounds like a delightful throwback to an 80s era of neon vampire flicks, such as Vamp, Near Dark and The Lost Boys. For one thing, it’s set in the 1980s, and sees a well-to-do couple leave their fancy Los Angeles flat and sample the city’s “electric nighttime” realm (to quote Deadline’s plot description).

It’s here that they encounter a woman called ‘Nameless’ and her “hard-partying cabal” (Deadline again), who are almost certainly decadent, amoral vampires.

Flesh Of The Gods will almost certainly be a tonally dark affair, given that the script is by Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote the likes of Seven for David Fincher and 8mm, though the screenwriter distanced himself from the latter when director Joel Schumacher (who did The Lost Boys!) brightened it up a bit.

Originally, it was going to be Oscar Isaac playing husband Raoul and Kristen Stewart playing the wife, Alex; now, it sounds as though Wagner Moura is the new Raoul. As far as we’re aware, it’s still Elizabeth Olsen playing the nightclub-dwelling Nameless.

Cosmatos demonstrating his talent for creating vibrant, psychedelic imagery in those earlier features. Flesh Of The Gods sounds like the ideal venue for more of the same.

No word on a release date yet (by the sounds of things, it’s still in pre-production), but we’ll bring you more as we hear it.
