Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud in Freud’s Last Session. Here’s the trailer.

Anthony Hopkins is no stranger to playing psychiatrists, though this role is unlikely to involve fava beans and a nice Chianti. In fact, this time, it looks as though dinner is off the menu entirely.

Freud’s Last Session, based on the play of the same name by Mark St Germain, itself based on the book The Question Of God by Dr Armand M Nicholi, Jr, imagines a scenario wherein Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, invites Chronicles Of Narnia author CS Lewis, here played by Matthew Goode, over for a debate about the existence of God.

Sounds like just the kind of fodder that actors love getting their teeth into, and the acclaim for the play itself suggests that it’s no chore for audiences either. The adaptation into a film should build on that, and the movie itself is just sneaking into American cinemas in time to qualify it for awards season recognition. Worth a try, right?

Alongside Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode in the ensemble are Liv Lisa Fries and Jodi Balfour.

Matt Brown directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Mark St Germain.

It’s a return to the world of CS Lewis for Anthony Hopkins as well. He memorably played the author all the way back in 1993 for Sir Richard Attenborough. In that case, he played opposite Debra Winder in a hugely acclaimed movie (with hugely acclaimed performances too). The movie in question is the not-talked-about-enough Shadowlands.

As for Freud’s Last Session? Well, it’s released in the US later this month, with a UK release likely in early 2024. Sony Pictures Classics is behind the release, and we’ll keep you posted as and when we hear more of a UK bow for the film.

In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below…
