Tim Robinson tries to hang onto his new best bud in Andrew DeYoung and A24’s upcoming comedy. Check out the Friendship trailer below.
“Men shouldn’t have friends”, declares the tagline on A24’s newest comedy flick. A little harsh, maybe; but one broken plate glass window and a lot of screaming later, Friendship's trailer certainly puts forward a compelling argument.
If you’re familiar with Robinson’s work on I Think You Should Leave – his three-season Netflix sketch show in which people find endlessly inventive ways to get themselves removed from social situations – you might know what to expect from Friendship. Robinson plays Craig, a lonely man invited to his new neighbour’s house for a beer and a song. Friendship blossoms until, after “a couple of really nice hangs”, Austin (Paul Rudd) decides they should go their separate ways.
Judging from the second half of the trailer, Craig might have something to say about that. Look – he’s doing the I Think You Should Leave voice!
The film marks another somewhat rare, but welcome, delve into comedy from the notoriously trendy studio, joining the likes of last year’s Y2K (still awaiting UK release) and Halina Reijn’s Bodies Bodies Bodies (the director’s latest, Babygirl, is in UK cinemas now).
The feature debut of writer-director Andrew DeYoung (Our Flag Means Death; Miracle Workers), the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, where A24 picked up US distribution rights. Reactions so far seem about as divisive as the star’s Netflix show: this is screaming cult hit louder than an emotionally stunted TV lawyer. Fingers crossed it gets picked up for UK distribution soon…
Friendship arrives in US cinemas May 2025.
