Gattaca, Elysium and Looper heading to 4K disc in 2021

A trio of science fiction films are on their way to the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format next year, it’s being reported – more here.

The end of the year is already full of interesting catalogue releases for followers of the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray format – you can find our full list of what’s coming up here – and it looks as if plans are afoot for some strong titles in 2021 as well.

The terrific US website The Digital Bits has been asking around, and discovered that Sony in the US is planning to bring a trio of compelling sci-fi movies to the format in the early part of next year.

Andrew Niccol’s Gattaca, Rian Johnson’s Looper and Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium are all said to be in the works for a physical Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray release in the US at least. That doesn’t always mean we’ll get them in the UK too (the Jump Street movies haven’t had a UK release on 4K, for instance, and both of them are available in the US). But sci-fi titles of the scale of those three do tend to travel rather well, and Sony has just released Blomkamp’s District 9 on 4K in the UK for a start.

Sony, incidentally, has already announced Roland Emmerich’s 2012 for 4K disc release in the US next January. No news as of yet of a UK release.

More as we hear it. In the meantime, you can find more at The Digital Bits.
