After eight years, Gore Verbinski’s back with a thriller called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. And it now has a cast, with Sam Rockwell, Michael Peña and Zazie Beetz among the large names.

It’s almost exactly eight years since director Gore Verbinski released a film – that being the 2016 horror, A Cure For Wellness. Now, though, the Pirates Of The Caribbean filmmaker appears to have gotten a new project together, with Deadline reporting that a cast has been announced for a genre mash-up called Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.

Among the major names you’ll find Sam Rockwell (most recently seen in Argylle), Haley Lu Richardson, Juno Temple, Zazie Beetz and Michael Peña.

According to Deadline’s plot summary, the film’s about a “man from the future” – who’ll be played by Rockwell – whose mission is to assemble a group of “disgruntled patrons” (played by those other names mentioned above) to “join him on a one-night-six-block quest to save the world from the terminal threat of a rogue artificial intelligence”.

It sounds as though we’re in for a sci-fi action comedy thriller adventure, which is good fodder for Verbinski, whose best work has reliably mixed genres to crowd-pleasing effect – away from the Pirates franchise, just look at his sterling animated feature, Rango, a gonzo comedy western made with ILM.

Verbinski hasn’t had the best of luck with his projects over the past decade or more, with at least two either falling apart (his BioShock game adaptation, a Gambit X-Men spin-off) or failing to do the numbers expected (The Lone Ranger, the aforementioned A Cure For Wellness). Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, which is due to go into production later this year in South Africa, could be the film that gets things back on track for him.

More as we get it.
