Studiocanal have released the first trailer for Mike Leigh’s latest film, Hard Truths, starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste. Take a look below.

“I don’t understand you. But I love you.”

These are words that close out the Hard Truths trailer. The film follows two sisters with widely different outlooks on life and we’re calling it now; this one is going to hit us in the feels, like the kids say.

Take a look at the first Hard Truths trailer.

Well, that looks proper excellent, doesn’t it? Leigh is a veteran of British cinema, but the filmmaker rarely misses when it comes to delivering life-affirming drama with a side order of dry comedy.

Hard Truths stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Michele Austin, both of whom have worked with Leigh before. Both actresses featured in Leigh’s seminal 1996 film Secrets & Lies and Austin has since gone on to be a bit of a regular in Leigh’s films.

There’s no official synopsis to share, but the film’s press releases simply details that the film is set in London and it “explores family relationships in the post-pandemic world”.

Hard Truths is set to have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday (6th September). The film will also have a glitzy, glamorous gala screening at the BFI London Film Festival in October and Mike Leigh is due to give a Screen Talk at the festival too.

Hard Truths doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated on that.
