The Raid director Gareth Evans’ latest film, Havoc, finished shooting in 2021 – three years on, it’ll stream on Netflix in late 2024, a report says.
An ominous silence has hung over Havoc, the latest film from The Raid director Gareth Evans, which led to some speculation that Netflix might have quietly scrapped it. Filming on the thriller wrapped in 2021, and little has been heard from the production since – Havoc was also conspicuously missing from Netflix’s roster of films scheduled for release in 2024, which emerged in February.
Netflix has form when it comes to abandoning films in post-production – see the sorry tale of The Mothership, the Halle Berry sci-fi adventure we’ll never see – hence why there have been some concerns over Havoc's ongoing safety.
A new report, however, suggests that Havoc is still alive and well, with its debut on Netflix set for later this year. According to World of Reel's source, the streaming giant will upload the movie to its platform in “late 2024”. There’s no word as to whether a cinema release is planned.
Evans both writes and directs the film, which features a starry cast: Tom Hardy plays the lead, a detective named Walker, and he’s joined by Forest Whitaker, Timothy Olyphant and Justin Cornwell in undisclosed roles. An old synopsis from 2021 reads:
After a drug deal goes awry, a detective must fight his way through a criminal underworld to rescue a politician’s estranged son, while untangling his city’s dark web of conspiracy and corruption.
Evans broke into the mainstream with 2011’s The Raid – a blistering martial arts thriller shot with the tension of a horror film – and has become known for his talent for staging action ever since. The Raid 2 (2014) featured some spectacular driving sequences and a bracing hammer attack; 2018’s Apostle (also for Netflix) featured some unforgettably bloody encounters, and TV series Gangs Of London was a crime drama told with lashings of gore. The latter’s even getting third series.
For now, it sounds as though Havoc is still alive, having gone through what we can only imagine has been an incredibly lengthy editing process. If we get official confirmation of its release, we’ll be sure to pass it along.
