Update: Over a decade after they made the tank-based war film Fury together, Brad Pitt and director David Ayer are teaming up again. They’ve made Heart Of The Beast (which, thinking about it, would have made a good alternate title for Fury).

There’s more war and grittiness, but this time in the modern day rather than World War II, and this time focusing on Pitt’s ex-Special Forces veteran and his friendship with a loveable dog. When their light aircraft crashes somewhere in the wildnerness, the pair fight for survival in a harsh environment – expect rapids, rickety bridges and lots of angry wolves.

The first trailer has emerged ahead of its September release, and it looks like a thoroughly stylish affair. It’s also curious to see another film about a survivalist and a dog flying around in a prop plane this close to Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars, out in August, but there we are.

Heart Of The Beast is in US and UK cinemas from the 25th September.

Our original story follows…

14th May 2026: After repeatedly breaking FIA rules as veteran racing driver Sony Hayes in last year’s F1: Da Movie, Brad Pitt is heading to Alaska.

Heart Of The Beast will see director David Ayer reunite with Pitt for the first time since Fury, their superb World War II tank drama that might just be the best movie of Ayer’s career (well, that and The Beekeeper, but we’ll get back to that).

This latest thriller will see Pitt play an ex-Special Forces soldier whose plane crashes in the middle of Alaska, leaving him with only his wits and his trusty dog companion to keep him company. That’s according to the short plot summary published by Deadline, which also has a US release date: 25th September.

With a star like Pitt attached, we’re guessing the UK debut won’t be too far behind.

Heart Of The Beast will release almost exactly a decade after Suicide Squad – Ayer’s only foray into comic book filmmaking, and which was heavily re-edited before its release. Before that, he began his career as a screenwriter on such films as Training Day and The Fast And The Furious, before branching out into directing with the 2005 thriller, Harsh Times.

At their best, Ayer’s films are immersive and exciting; 2012’s End Of Watch added a dash of horror intensity to the day-to-day lives of two LA cops. But then there are films like Sabotage and Bright, where Ayer’s appetite for grittiness tips over into noisy mean-spiritedness.

Ayer teamed up with action star Jason Statham and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer for The Beekeeper in 2024, and the result was a brilliantly self-aware action thriller that keeps escalating its stakes until its frankly bonkers grand finale. Bonus points for a brilliantly dry performance from Jeremy Irons as one of the villains.

The Ayer-Statham partnership was so fruitful, they’re working together again on another action flick – John Doe begins filming this September.

If Heart Of The Beast is more End Of Watch, Fury or The Beekeeper, and less Sabotage, Bright or Suicide Squad, then we could be in for a corker. We’ll let me know if that UK release date materialises.
