Milly Alcock joins the new DC Universe of films and TV shows, and she’s been cast as the new Supergirl. More here.

The new DC Universe has found its Supergirl with the announcement that Milly Alcock will play Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, one of the many DC Comics projects in development at Warner Bros under the stewardship of James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Milly Alcock is best known for her portrayal of young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game Of Thrones spin-off series House Of The Dragon.

According to Deadline, the character will appear in an as-yet unnamed DC project before starring in her own solo film, Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.

While the Supergirl movie has been announced, no director has yet been named for the project. As for the unnamed movie that the character will debut in, next year’s Superman: Legacy seems to be the logical choice given that this casting announcement arrives just as cameras are about to roll in Georgia on that production.

James Gunn himself is taking the reins on Superman: Legacy and the DCU head honcho has previously spoken about his vision for the character, stating, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Now it looks like Gunn has found the actor he believes can portray that more ‘hardcore’ version of the character.

The director took to social media to confirm Alcock’s casting, writing: ‘Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House Of The Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl.’

Alcock was certainly one of the more impressive elements of the first season of House Of The Dragon, standing out from the ensemble and emanating the kind of steely demeanour that we imagine that Gunn would have been looking for. Things are really moving now with Gunn’s DCU. We’ll bring you more news on current and future projects in the DC Universe as we hear it.
