IMAX reveals a sizeable list of films coming to the format in 2025: here’s what to expect and when to expect it.

When it was reported around this time last year that Tom Cruise was engaged in a rather ‘spirited’ series of conversations with studio executives regarding Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning's IMAX allocation, it ushered into the foreground a fact that had steadily been emerging over the last few years.

The IMAX technology (and ticket price uplift that accompanies it) has established itself as something of a kingmaker in Hollywood. Studios that can secure the longest IMAX runs for their films can gain a much-needed commercial edge over their rivals.

Such was the case with Dead Reckoning, as the film’s brief IMAX window was surely a factor in it being beaten at the box office by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a movie mostly featuring people in rooms talking. That’s no slight on Cruise’s film either: it’s a great movie – perfect summer fun – but it simply didn’t get the chance to make an extra $200m at the box office thanks to IMAX uplifts in the way that Oppenheimer did.

That kind of extra cash would have altered the conversation around Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, and studios are keenly aware of that, which is probably why IMAX’s release calendar is filling up earlier and earlier as executives attempt to book out the limited number of screens for as long as possible.

That means more IMAX movies, which is certainly good news for us. Even though we’re only halfway through 2024, the company has already announced its 2025 slate – and there are more films on there than we’ve seen in the past.

Here’s the list, via The Hollywood Reporter:

  • Captain America: Brave New World – 15th February
  • Untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan film – 7th March
  • Thunderbolts – 2nd May
  • Flowervale Street – 16th May
  • Mission: Impossible 8 – 23rd May
  • How To Train Your Dragon – 13th June
  • Untitled Formula One Film – 27th June
  • Superman: Legacy – 11th July
  • The Fantastic Four – 25th July
  • Mercy – 15th August
  • The Bride! – 3rd October
  • TRON: Ares – 10th October
  • Blade – 7th November

IMAX also revealed that Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming epic, Megalopolis, is getting a global IMAX release.

Tom Cruise should be happy with what looks like a lengthy IMAX engagement for the next film in the Mission: Impossible series, although it should be noted that more films are set to be added to the schedule over the coming months.

The company also added that its new generation of cameras was currently in beta testing, with filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Jordan Peele trying them out. When we hear of more IMAX screenings, we’ll let you know.
