Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is being adapted into another feature film, this time as a continuation of the Prime Video series. Oh, and John Krasinski’s back as Jack.
Actor turned filmmaker John Krasinski is, according to a new report, set to reprise the role of Jack Ryan for a feature film at Prime Video. It’s a part he first began to play for the streaming platform in 2018, with the thriller series being one of the most successful attempts to adapt Tom Clancy’s novels.
Despite Krasinski’s growing reputation as a filmmaker (see A Quiet Place and IF), Prime Video has, Deadline says, managed to lure him back for a movie continuation of that earlier series.
Clancy’s bestselling Jack Ryan novels have had a plethora of adaptations over the years. Alec Baldwin was the first actor to take on the role, in John McTiernan’s terrific 1990 film The Hunt For Red October. Harrison Ford then took over for two films directed by Philip Noyce (who chatted to us on our patented podcast) – 1992’s Patriot Games and 1994’s Clear and Present Danger.
Ryan wouldn’t be seen onscreen again until the new millennium, with Ben Affleck starring in Phil Alden Robinson’s 2002 film The Sum Of All Fears. The last feature film to date saw Chris Pine star in Kenneth Branagh’s 2014 film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Arguably the most successful adaptation is the 2018 Amazon Prime series Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski and created for television by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland. The series follows the titular CIA analyst as he’s thrust into the field to investigate a series of suspicious bank transfers. Other series follow a war in Venezuela, a plot to resurrect the Soviet Union and corruption in the CIA.
The show ran for four series and concluded in 2023. The series ranks among Prime Video’s top-three most-watched series globally.
Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly, who starred in the series as Ryan’s boss James Greer and station chief Mike November respectively , are also in negotiations to reprise their roles. Andrew Bernstein, who served as an executive producer and director on series two, will direct from a script by Aaron Rabin, who served as a co-executive producer and writer on series four.
You can stream all four series of Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime.
