James Bond 26 seems no closer, as Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson still refuse to be drawn on casting.
In lieu of an actual James Bond film or anything concrete about the next adventure for 007, the never-ending rumour mill has had to take on the heavy lifting.
Is Aaron Taylor-Johnson the new James Bond? If he is, nobody’s come close to confirming it.
Are Christopher Nolan or Edward Berger directing the new 007 film? No, they’re not, but they each got their moment in the clickbait spotlight.
Still, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson are the ones we look to for any sniff of an answer to stuff, and the pair have given a new interview to The Independent. In it, Barbara Broccoli confirms her commitment to James Bond films having a theatrical release, as we saw when she held out for No Time To Die to get a full cinema outing (against reports of substantive offers from streamers).
She also confirmed again that they’re looking for an actor in their 30s, with a view to be playing James Bond for a good decade or so. The report also states that ‘whiteness is not a given’. But for the minute, that’s all the clues we appear to be getting.
“It’s a big decision”, she says, while giving nothing away about when we might know when that decision is coming. More recently, reports have suggested that getting the script right has proven incredibly tricky, and that even five years after No Time To Die wrapped filming, we’re not really that much closer to a new James Bond film going before cameras.
Broccoli and Wilson will be receiving the Irving G Thalberg Memorial Award this weekend, so more interviews are likely forthcoming. And who knows? They may just be saving their announcements for around then? Don’t hold your breath, though. The earliest – even if they got their skates on – that we’ll be seeing a James Bond film now is the end of 2026…
