Sweet, calm James Cameron has responded to critique of the True Lies and Aliens 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release transfers.
James Cameron has been attending the same charm school as Ridley Scott it seems, as he responds to criticism over the recent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases of True Lies and Aliens in particular. We covered some of the backlash towards them both here.
Fans had waited a long, long time for Cameron’s older films to get fresh transfers. The expectation was that James Cameron’s exacting technical demands would result in something really special. It didn’t quite work out like that, and Cameron himself it turns out was very aware of the fan feedback regarding the releases.
Rest assured that he’s taken the critique in his stead, and responded to it in a nice, measured way. “When people start reviewing your grain structure, they need to move out of mom’s basement and meet somebody”, he quietly observed to The Hollywood Reporter in a nice, polite new chat.
“I’m serious”, he said, absorbing the constructive criticism and responding in kind. “I mean, are you fucking kidding me? I’ve got a great team that does the transfers. I do all the colour and density work. I look at every shot, every frame, and then the final transfer is done by a guy who has been with me [for a long time]. All the Avatar films are done that way. Everything is done that way.”
Cameron took the end of his answer to hold out an olive branch to the fans who bought the 4K discs in droves. Specific to their criticism, he warmly suggested to “get a life, people, seriously.”
Aliens, True Lies, The Abyss and the Avatar films are all now available on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, and James Cameron will no doubt be happily staffing the customer service lines should anyone wish to cordially discuss any problems they have with the transfers.
