Jamie Lee Curtis is looking likely to take over from the late Angela Lansbury in a new take on Murder, She Wrote. More here.
We’ve known for over a year now that a film version of the beloved 1980s TV series, Murder, She Wrote is heading our way courtesy of the writing team behind 2023’s Dumb Money.
The writers of the film, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, revealed in September of that year that they were teaming with producer Amy Pascal to work on an adaptation of Murder, She Wrote, the classic 1980s US murder mystery show that made the late Angela Lansbury into a beloved star.
Of course, that announcement came at the very tail-end of the Hollywood writers’ strikes so just how quickly things got up and running, we can only guess, but accoring to Deadline, things are definitely moving. What’s more with none other than Jamie Lee Curtis now in the frame to play Jeesica Fletcher, the travelling sleuth that was played by Lansbury in the original show.
Universal has commissioned the project. Murder, She Wrote ran for 12 seasons and was a daytime TV regular here in the UK for many years. The series followed mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher (portrayed by Lansbury) as she solved murders.
Curtis is enjoying a serious purple period at the moment, having won the Best Suppporting Actress Oscar in 2022 for Everything Everywhere All At Once while also having put a definitive capstone on her decades-long portrayal of Laurie Strode in David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.
She’s not done there though. As well as portraying Lansbury in the planned take on Murder, She Wrote, next year will see Curtis reunite with Lindsey Lohan for the long-mooted sequel to Freaky Friday. Titled Freakier Friday, the film has already wrapped and is now in post-production ahead of a 2025 release. Oh, and she’s also shot a film for none other than James L Brooks. That one is titled Ella McKay and is also due out next year.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing Murder She Wrote alongside Amy Pascal but we don’t yet know who is directing. More as we uncover it…
