Donnie Yen is next to have a go at directing a John Wick movie, as he gears up to shoot spin-off film Caine.

With chances of a full John Wick Chapter 5 still looking a little on the slim side for the time being, Lionsgate is continuing to expand the universe of its current most popular franchise with another spin-off movie.

Weโ€™ve already had one, with Len Wisemanโ€™s troubled Ballerina movie going through a fair amount of reshooting and retooling before it finally arrived on screens. Still, it did decent enough business, and Lionsgate has not been discouraged.

Next up then is Caine the character played by Donnie Yen in the fourth John Wick film. Itโ€™s been on the stove for a little while, and the screenplay has been put together by Mattson Tomlin (whoโ€™s also been co-scribbling The Batman: Part II). Originally, it was Robert Askins on screenplay duties. How much of his work will make it to the final document is unclear.

What is known is that Donnie Yen isnโ€™t just headlining Caine, itโ€™s going to be his latest feature film as director as well. And Lionsgate has the movie motoring too, with production set to get underway the other side of Easter. No release date has been announced, but a sporting guess would be early 2028 to have the movie in cinemas. Assuming slightly less drama in post-production.

Donnie Yen has issued a suitably chirpy statement about all of this, and it reads (with a hat tip to Dark Horizons):

What drew me to Caine is the contradiction. He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honours what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story.

All the right words, all in the right order. Splendid. More on Caine as we hear itโ€ฆ
