Sony is finally pressing ahead with Jumanji 3 ā the fifth film in the Jumanji universe ā with a release date in 2026.
Itās been a whopping four years since Jake Kasdan ā director of the most recent two Jumanji films ā revealed that another film in the series was in the āearly planning stages.ā That was all the way back in 2020 and as you well know, the years following would be riddled with problems, delays, strikes and shutdowns for Hollywood.
Still, 2019ās Jumanji: The Next Level did leave the door open for another film and it looks like that is finally happening, with the news that Sony is backing one more film in the series. A December 2026 release date booked for the filmās debut. We donāt yet have a title for the project but it has been confirmed that Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are likely to return. And presumably, Jake Kasdan ā who talked to us on the Film Stories podcast back in 2019 ā is set to sign up.
Dwayne Johnson has indicated in the past that the next Jumanji film may well be the last, but with the first film grossing almost a billion dollars and the second hitting the $800m mark, you can see why Sony are keen to press ahead and explore if the franchise still has the same drawing power.
Itāll mark the fifth film in the Jumanji universe, if you include the original movie and the delightful Zathura: A Space Adventure too.
No news has yet surfaced regarding plot details or production dates, although juggling the schedules of such busy people must have been a tricky task. Karen Gillan said this when talking up the chances of a new film earlier this year, telling The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m sure it’s tricky to wrangle everyone’s schedules, but I haven’t heard anything about it other than the fact that we will be doing it at some point ā¦ So we’re all so enthusiastic about it. We all love working on those films, and it’s just a matter of when.”
When we do hear more regarding the next Jumanji film, including the title, weāll let you know right here.
