In spite of the warm reception to the film, Warner Bros will be pulling Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 from US cinemas this week.
The treatment of Clint Eastwood’s new and potentially final film, Juror #2, has been one of the more baffling stories of 2024, in a year that’s not been shy of them.
We’ve gone through the story in a bit more detail here, but the bottom line is that Warner Bros was going to send the courtroom drama straight to streaming, and then consented to a tiny US cinema release. We fared better with the release here in the UK.
There was some hope of a reprieve when the rumoured box office for Juror #2 came in quite strongly, although Warner Bros has declined to report the actual numbers. However, it’s now been confirmed that in spite of strong reviews and audience interest, the movie is ending its US theatrical run at the end of this week. Juror #2 will be out of American cinemas by the weekend, with Warner Bros pressing ahead with its plan to fasttrack the movie to its Max streaming service instead.
One bright spot for the film is that apparently the studio has relented on its plan not to put Juror #2 forward for awards consideration. A modest Oscar campaign at best is expected though.
The film wasn’t press screened in the UK to our knowledge, and its first public screening took place just a week after its release in America. It debuted at AFI Fest days ahead of its cinema outing, quickly dispelling the idea that Warner Bros was veering away from the film due to its quality.
Our review of the movie is no outlier. Juror #2 has been receiving very positive notices.
It’s expected that Juror #2 will now be available on streaming, in America at least, by the end of the month. It’s unclear if a physical media release is planned at this point too, but we’ll find out in due course.
