Fresh from starring in this year’s Civil War, Kirsten Dunst will feature in Derek Cianfrance’s in true crime drama Roofman – the director’s first film in eight years.
Kirsten Dunst has a long and storied filmography, but the actor added an undoubted flourish to it this year, leading the cast of Alex Garland’s Civil War. The A24 movie proved to be one of the most viscerally-unforgettable films of the year, reminding us (if indeed we needed reminding) of the power of Dunst’s enduring onscreen presence.
So what’s next for the actor in the wake of that memorable turn? She’ll reportedly be appearing alongside Keanu Reeves and some other big names in Ruben Östlund’sThe Entertainment System Is Down, although given that the premise of that film sees the action take place on a packed Jumbo jet, it could yet be that she’s part of a much wider ensemble.
Beyond that, she also features again in Charlie McDermott’s upcoming Rhubarb, but again we suspect not in a starring role. However, also on Dunst’s slate, as reported by Deadline, is a role opposite Channing Tatum in Roofman, the first film by Derek Cianfrance in quite some time.

Having left the upcoming Wolfman film, Cianfrance – director of beloved classics Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines – has elected to tell the tale of Jeffrey Manchester, a criminal who had a peculiar criminal whose MO was to break into stores via their roofs and relieve them of their cash. At one point, he made a living out of robbing McDonalds restaurants and hiding out in a Toys R Us store, where he met and struck up a relationship with a struggling employee. The word is that Dunst will play the employee Manchester falls in love with.
It’s a bizarre story, but given that Cianfrance made Blue Valentine, he’s more than capable of grounding the tale in an achingly real way. Plus, he now has the talents of the mighty Dunst at his disposal too. We’re keen to see where this one goes and will let you know when we hear more. In the meantime, expect to see Dunst out and about on the awards circuit in the next few months as that Civil War turn (hopefully) earns her some well-deserved acclaim.
