Lord of the Rings is entering the world of NFT’s, just as J R R Tolkien would, er, have wanted: more details here.

Just before you get reading this one, be warned: it’s a bit of a head-scratcher. Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring is now a set of NFT’s (non-fungible tokens).

Warner Bros. Discovery has – it says here – partnered with Web3 firm Eluvio to release the first of the Middle Earth movies – Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ringas a set of NFTs meant to kick off the WB Movieverse.

Titled Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (Extended Version) Web3 Movie Experience, it will live on Eluvio’s-branded ‘Content Blockchain’.

No idea. But let’s press on.

According to Eluvio CEO Michelle Munson, “Fans of The Lord Of The Rings can now acquire, participate, and trade in an epic living media experience that will undoubtedly surprise and delight them”.

“An epic living media experience”. Just going to repeat that.

Along with a digital copy of Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring, the $30 Mystery Edition comes with one of three interactive navigation menus modelled after The Shire, Rivendell, or the Mines of Moria, as well as a selection of related image galleries, eight hours of special features and a number of “hidden AR collectibles”.

The $100 Epic Edition comes with access to menus and pictures from all three locations, as well as an assortment of other pictures not found on the cheaper option. Users will also be able to view their AR collectibles on their phones after discovering them sprinkled throughout the movie NFT, which will only be viewable in a browser.

Note that an NFT offers nothing physical. It’s billed as a digital collectable, which feels like an insane phrase really, but we just write this stuff.

More details and purchase options are available on the Warner Bros. Discovery website.
