Update: It’s taken years of trying, but writer-director Andrew Niccol finally got his arms trade thriller sequel going last year. Filming on Lord Of War 2 began in November, with Nicolas Cage again playing the moral blank that is Yuri Orlov, seller of weapons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, independent distribution company Vertical has picked up the rights to release Lord Of War 2 in US cinemas. The plan is to have it on big American screens at some point in 2027; hopefully it’ll be getting a release in UK cinemas too.

We’ll update you again when we learn more on that front.

Our original story follows…

11th November 2025: Over two years after it was first announced, the crime thriller sequel Lord Of War 2 is finally going into production. Writer-director Andrew Niccol, who wrote the original, is back, and Nicolas Cage returns to continue the story of arms dealer Yuri Orlov.

The film’s been subject to a number of delays, with shooting originally set to begin in 2023 before being pushed back to March 2024. According to Variety, though, filming will now start on Lord Of War 2 this month, and there are even a couple of new additions to its cast.

Sylvia Hoeks (who was magnificent in Blade Runner 2049) and Greg Tarzan Davis will appear in undisclosed roles, joining Cage and Bill Skarsgรฅrd and Laura Harrier.

Skarsgรฅrd has a major role in the story; he’ll play Orlov’s adult son, according to Variety, who’s now an arms dealer and has his own private army. There’s a “bitter rivalry” between father and offspring, not least because they’re both having relationships with the same woman. It’s like a modern Oedipus – or Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade.

Andrew Niccol’s one of those filmmakers who’s never had a huge box office hit, but has kept on making cult genre movies. Gattaca was a heart-wrenching sci-fi thriller; Lord Of War was an engrossing, keenly-researched crime drama featuring one of Cage’s more restrained performances. He also wrote The Truman Show, superbly directed by Peter Weir, and one of the absolute best films of the 1990s.

Niccol hasn’t made a new film since 2018’s not-bad cyber thriller, Anon, but between Lord Of War 2 and an animated movie called I, Object, it sounds as though he’s been keeping busy.

More on his weaponry sequel as we get it.
