We Need To Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay is reportedly about to embark on another film: revenge thriller Stone Mattress.
With films like We Need To Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here on her impressive resume, there’s no doubt that Lynne Ramsay is a celebrated film director. Given her penchant for making short films too, Ramsay has never been what you’d call a prolific director of features: her last film was 2017’s You Were Never Really Here, and before that, 2011’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. According to a new report, though, Ramsay’s next project may be her second to go before cameras in a single calendar year.
Ramsay has already finished up production on Die, My Love, a film ‘about a woman driven to the brink of insanity by marriage and motherhood.’ Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek all star. That one began production back in August and will release next year.
Given that we’re pretty late into the year, however, a surprising report has popped up at World Of Reel which claims that Ramsay’s next project, Stone Mattress could begin production before the year is out.
Here’s what we know about this project so far: Julianne Moore, Sandra Oh and Kyle Chandler are set to star in the adaptation of the Margaret Atwood novel. Amazon will be producing, with Film4 and StudioCanal in negotiations to distribute. Lynne Ramsay has written the script and will direct the feature.
Stone Mattress is a ‘revenge thriller set on a cruise ship sailing through the Arctic. Moore will play lead character Verna, a retired physiotherapist who’s been widowed twice. She embarks on a cruise to the Arctic Northwest Passage and meets Grace (played by Oh) and the seemingly-ordinary Bob (played by Chandler, we think). As Bob tries to seduce her, Verna worries that Bob may not be as harmless as he seems, and pains of her past begin to resurface.’
According to the report, Ramsay revealed that she’s been scouting locations for the film and even if it doesn’t shoot at the tail-end of this year, an early 2025 shoot is likely. The filmmaker also has Polaris in pre–production, another collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix following their acclaimed work on You Were Never Really Here.
If we do get a glut of Lynne Ramsay films in the next couple of years, we’ll consider ourselves fortunate indeed.
