Despite some significant troubles, the Madonna biopic project is still happening according to actress Julia Garner. More on that below.

A Madonna biopic has been in the works for a good few years now, but there hasn’t been much progress. The movie originally entered development in 2020 and we first reported on the biopic in 2022. Since then, the film has been delayed, canned and even turned into a TV show

Such developments don’t usually promise good things, but actress Julia Garner doesn’t seem too worried.

“That’s supposed to still happen,” Garner told the SmartLess podcast recently, as reported by Variety. Garner was cast in the role of Madonna in 2022, having learned to dance and sing for the part.

“I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing,” the actress said. “And sing with her!”

Garner, who is currently appearing as the Silver Surfer – civilian name Shalla-Bal – in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, assured fans that the multiple delays to the Madonna biopic aren’t anything to worry about. The actress promised that “anything that’s great…takes a long time.”

Madonna is due to write and direct the project herself after significant troubles in finding a writer and a script that satisfied everyone. The pop star took to social media in late 2024 to vent her frustrations with the industry and getting her biopic made, saying she was told to “downsize” and “think smaller” when it came to her life’s story.

With Garner still involved and Madonna as the creative lead, we’re hoping the film will eventually move into production and see the light of day before long.

More on this as it comes in.
