Margot Robbie’s long-rumoured Sims movie has now reportedly got the green light from Amazon MGM.

The Sims is a game that most millennials grew up playing. We were immersed and invested in the intricate lives of the characters on our old, boxy PCs in the early-2000s and occasionally, accidentally set things on fire.

We reported in March that a film based on The Sims was in the works, with Loki-director Kate Herron helming it and Margot Robbie producing through her LuckyChap banner. Now, Puck News (via Dark Horizons) is reporting that the film has found a home with Amazon MGM.

Screen Rant mentions that Netflix’s bid for the film’s rights was higher, but Amazon MGM ultimately won by promising the film a theatrical release.

The Sims games – of which there are 4 main games as well as several expansion packs and spin-offs – are life simulation games, where you can create your own characters, their houses and manage their daily lives. There’s no narrative or an end to the game, you can play it indefinitely, which gives the filmmakers behind the film a lot to work with.

The Sims movie is the latest in a series of video game adaptations, which really have found their groove in recent years. TV’s The Last Of Us and Fallout have done very well, as have films such as Sonic The Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu

While there’s no official news on who might star in The Sims, Robbie herself is an option here as she found great success with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which she also produced and was Oscar-nominated for. However, it seems that she is currently the busiest woman in Hollywood. She’s currently developing a Monopoly film and it was recently confirmed a Pirates Of The Caribbean film with her in the lead is still moving forward. Robbie has also been attached to an Avengelyne film, based on a comic book hero of the same name.
