We might finally be getting a new X-Men film as Michael Lesslie has been tapped to write a new film for Marvel.
It looks like the X-Men have come to stay in the MCU. After the disappointing Dark Phoenix, the X-Men have been laying low until we got quick teases in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels before Deadpool & Wolverine re-introduces everyone’s favourite grumpy mutant proper.
Deadline now reports that Marvel is planning a proper X-Men movie and Michael Lesslie is in negotiations to pen the script. Lesslie wrote last year’s Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes, proving he can adapt someone else’s material. Lesslie has also penned the script for the new Now You See Me sequel which will be filming later this year.
The film is officially in development, but it’s still early days and there is no news on when we might see it or who might star or direct. Deadline also mentions that Marvel boss Kevin Feige is looking to take his time with a new X-Men film, which seems like a smart move considering the rough time the X-Men and the wider MCU have been having recently.
Things are looking up though. Disney+’s X-Men ‘97 was a huge success with audiences and critics alike and a second season is in the works, although Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum said it might take a while to get the show back on our screens.
Patrick Stewart, who played Charles Xavier and reprised his role in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, has been talking about the possibility of returning to the role again, despite the fact that Xavier (and Wolverine) died in James Mangold’s Logan.
Variety asked Stewart whether there was a chance he’d play Charles Xavier again and the actor didn’t rule it out. “There may be. You know, the whole X-Men comic series is so huge, so vast, there might be an opportunity in which he comes back. We’ll see,” Stewart said in 2022.
More on all things X-Men when we hear them.
