Angelina Jolie stars as Maria Callas in the latest aching biopic from Pablo Larraín. Check out the Maria trailer.

Pablo Larraín truly is the king of biopics about sad women. His 2016 film Jackie, starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, captured Jackie’s grief perfectly and in 2021, Larraín explored Princess Diana’s complex inner state with Spencer. Of course, the director has done a lot of other, equally excellent films but his latest, Maria, feels like the third part in an unofficial trilogy of films about women grieving.

Take a look at the Maria trailer.

Maria is set in picturesque Paris and explores some of the final years of opera singer Maria Callas’ life. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it was warmly received. Maria will also screen as part of the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Here’s a short and sweet, official synopsis for Maria: From acclaimed director Pablo Larraín (Spencer, Jackie), MARIA will tell the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest female opera singer, relived, and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Valeria Golino join Jolie in the cast. Steven Knight has penned the script for Maria as he did for Spencer. Knight’s style of writing seems to go very well with Larraín’s directorial style so we’re very eager to see what the two cook up this time.

Maria is set to hit UK cinemas on 10th January, 2025, courtesy of StudioCanal. The film is distributed by Netflix in the US, where it’ll have a brief cinema run (for awards qualification, no doubt) before being added to the streaming service in December. Joel is a likely candidate for at least a nomination for Best Actress across many awards ceremonies so if you’re into that sort of thing, Maria is a must-watch.
