EA has announced that a new studio, Cliffhanger Games, has been formed and will make a single-player action adventure based on Marvel’s Black Panther.

The (big, toothsome) cat’s officially out of the bag: EA is making a single-player action adventure based on Marvel’s Black Panther. The game will be developed by a new studio, Cliffhanger Games, a Seattle-based outfit which EA says in a press release (thanks, Gamespot) comprises several people who worked on Shadow of Mordor and other triple-A titles, including God of War and Call of Duty.

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience,” said studio lead Kevin Stephens, formerly of Monolith Productions, “giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game. Wakanda is a rich SuperHero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

If you happen to be in game development yourself, the announcement also doubles as a job ad – there are currently openings at Cliffhanger’s new offices, and EA says it will continue to build out a team there “over the next few years.”

We’re still early in development with a long road ahead,” the press release reads, “but we know the foundation to any great story is to build an experienced team with diverse voices and perspectives and that’s what we want to build, especially with a SuperHero as important as Black Panther.”

We’re not quite sure why superhero uses CamelTextLikeThis in the quotes above, but there we are.

Black Panther isn’t the only Marvel game EA has in the works, either. Last year, the publishing behemoth announced that Montreal’s Motive Studio was to begin work on a single-player action adventure based on Iron Man. It was part-and-parcel of a “long-term deal” between EA and Marvel, which will see the former develop “at least three” new action games based on the latter’s comics/movies/bedspreads/delete as applicable.

Little else is currently known about EA’s Black Panther game as yet – there isn’t even a teaser trailer to share – but we do at least have the slick little graphic that now graces the top of this post. Growl.
