Peter Weir’s superb Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World is heading to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in September. More here.
When I came to watch Peter Weir’s Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World for the first time, I confess I wasn’t aware of its origins. That it was based on Patrick O’Brian’s series of books, and that plans were afoot to make a series of films based on his work.
Probably greenlit in part because of the success of Gladiator, Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World starred Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, with Peter Weir behind the camera. And if you’ve never had the pleasure, it’s bloody brilliant. Hugely entertaining, one of the best on-screen tellings of a joke you’ll ever hear, and naturally enough, it underperformed at the box office.
Honestly, if you ever tire of seeing digital effects fighting each other and yearn for a really good story, convincingly told, do give Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World a whirl.
I’ll get to the point of the story now.
The film, as you’ve almost certainly gleaned if you’ve got this far, is for the first time headed to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. It’s enjoyed a fresh remaster, and thanks to a deal between Disney and Sony, titles owned by the former are now being reissued on physical media by the latter. It’s slowly unlocking several titles in the Disney vaults. Armageddon can’t be far away.
Master & Commander lands on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the US first, in August, but it’s now confirmed that the UK release is following hot on its heels.
The pack comes with the 4K disc and a Blu-ray as well, which should account for the carried-across extra features. They’re currently listed as “Bonus features include Deleted Scenes, Historical and Geographical Trivia Track, Pop-Up Map.”
The film’s UK release on 4K disc is listed as 8th September 2025. You can find more information on it, and order yourself a copy, right here.
