Biopic of The Beatlesā€™ manager Brian Epstein Midas Man needed a lot of Help! to get over the finish line. Hereā€™s the trailer.

Rock biopics, it seems, are a difficult genre to navigate. Bohemian Rhapsody originally had Bryan Singer at the helm before Dexter Fletcher finished the film, for instance.

A similar fate has befallen Midas Man, a biopic of The Beatlesā€™ manager Brian Epstein. It began production in 2021 with Jonas Åkerlund directing, only for Sara Sugarman to take over later that year. When Sugarman departed, Joe Stephenson eventually took the reins to finally get the film over the finish line. In each case, the directors are said to have left over “creative differences”.

Midas Man wrapped production in 2023, and just over a year later, the once troubled movie is only a few weeks away from release.

Jacob Fortune-Lloyd stars as Epstein, Ed Speleers as Tex Ellington, Jay Leno as Ed Sullivan, with Blake Richardson as Paul McCartney, Jonah Lees as John Lennon, Leo Harvey-Elledge as George Harrison and Campbell Wallace as Ringo Starr. The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Emily Watson, Eddie Izzard, Darci Shaw and Adam Lawrence.

Stephenson (at least partly) directed the film from a screenplay by Brigit Grant.

The story will go something like this, according to Signature Entertainmentā€™s synopsis:

Meet Brian Epstein: a man who lived a thousand lives in a few years, and a visionary who transformed music history. From running a Liverpool record store to shaping the sound of a generation, his journey is a rollercoaster of ambition, passion, and relentless pursuit of greatness. Jacob Fortune-Lloyd stars as the mastermind behind The Beatlesā€™ meteoric rise, navigating a whirlwind of unprecedented fame, cultural revolution, and personal demons. But behind the glitz and glamour lies a man seeking acceptance and love in a world not ready. Midas Man peels back the curtain on the swinging ā€™60s, revealing the triumphs, heartbreaks, and secrets of the man who changed the face of music forever. Step into Brian’s world, where every touch turns to gold, but the most precious treasure remains just out of reach.

Midas Man will stream on Amazon Prime Video from the 30th October.
