Dev Patel’s directorial debut is getting closer… and here’s the trailer for Monkey Man, which is heading to cinemas shortly.

Now that Road House has released (although not in cinemas sadly), we can sate our thirst for bone-crunching action – for a little while at least. However, the next film on the horizon to offer artfully-filmed fisticuffs is Dev Patel’s Monkey Man, and judging by this new trailer, the film is taking no prisoners in its quest to be the most memorable action film of 2024.

Monkey Man is the Lion star’s directorial debut and you have to admire a kind of creative force like Patel: when he wasn’t landing these kind of roles in Hollywood, he simply went out and came up with a story (along with credited screenwriters with Paul Angunawela and John Collee) and then made the film himself. When you see the artistry and style that’s clearly evident in the trailer, that admiration only deepens.

Of course, it’s just a trailer and that’s no guarantee of the final quality of the movie, but the fact that Jordan Peele is releasing the film under his Monkeypaw Productions banner is a clear indicator of its worthiness, given that Peele’s tastes have undoubtedly been reshaping parts of the Hollywood landscape over the past six or seven years.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

“Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”

Patel is joined on screen in the film by Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande.

We’re on board for this one and are eagerly awaiting the film’s release on 5th April.
