Mulan lands next week, still Disney+ exclusive

Disney bows to a little pressure, and you’ll now be able to purchase the live action Mulan from services other than Disney+ next month.

UPDATE: With thanks to Ali Gray for clarifying for the correction, the only place you will be able to watch Mulan in the UK is via Disney+.  It will not, after all, be available on other VOD platforms. Happy to correct this piece. We have bolded up the incorrect section.

Disney continues to ‘evolve’ its release plans for its live action take on Mulan, that’s finally set to see the light of day from September 4th. The film is heading into cinemas around the world where they’re open to show the movie, but on the same day will also be released on Disney’s streaming service, Disney +. That said, it’ll be on Disney+ assuming subscribers are happy to pay an extra $29.99 – or whatever the UK price turns out to be – to access it.

Following some pushback over this plan – not least that Disney+ subscribers would need to maintain their subscription to keep access to the film they’ve paid top dollar for – the studio has relented a little.

Now, Mulan will also be available on other video on demand platforms, including Google Play Store and iTunes. At the moment, there are no plans to offer the movie through Amazon though, in what sounds like a dispute over who takes what amount of money from each sale.

More news as we hear it, and expect preorder links to start appearing soon…
