Do you have a massive NEO Magazine collection? Academia needs you! Check out our letter from the NEO Magazine Archive project below.
Calling all anime-heads! The University of Greenwich is putting together an archive of the much-missed NEO Magazine – a UK-based treasure trove celebrating East Asian culture – and has put a public call out for the last 15 issues missing from its collection.
Check out the letter in full below:
Attention all fans of anime, manga, and particularly NEO Magazine. At the University of Greenwich we are establishing an archive of NEO. In future we hope to exhibit the magazines’ articles for future generations and familiar fans, on top of publishing much research from this great resource.
But first – we are very close to getting a full collection of 245 issues of NEO! We have 15 issues missing (from no.145 onwards – list below). Duplicates of issues we have are also appreciated. Some limited funding has been obtained to acquire issues, and donations are appreciated. For donations, our funding can pay for postage and packaging.
So if you have any copies of NEO Magazine you would like to offer for this project, please get in touch with me by tracking me down on @jlwroot.bsky.social, or please contact me through my university email address – j.wroot@greenwich.ac.uk

This comes as part of the NEO Magazine Archive project – a University of Greenwich endeavor whose aims are:
- To store all 20 years of publications of NEO Magazine, to preserve for posterity.
- To encourage the research of NEO’s archive of feature articles, news, and reviews, through PhD projects, BA and MA student work, and through established academics and independent researchers.
- To publicise and promote this archive through museums, institutions, and public events, such as at MCM Comic Con (featured in many copies of NEO Magazine).
- To gather and document memories and interactions with the archive, for past and future generations, who both remember the magazine or are learning about it for the first time.
Launched in 2004 by editor Stu Taylor and designer Claire Trent, NEO celebrated all kinds of East Asian entertainment, from anime and manga to cosplay and cinema. From 2005 onwards, the magazine also ran an industry awards ceremony based on the same principles, held annually at London’s Comic Con. NEO concluded with its 245th issue in November 2024.
