Bucky Barns himself, Sebastian Stan, looks set to continue his impressive work away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a collaboration with director Cristian Mungiu.
If there’s one member of the ranks of the MCU that has really succeeded at searching out roles that stretch him as an artist, it’s surely Sebastian Stan. Yes, Robert Downey Jr won an Oscar this year and has been (rightly) lauded by all and sundry since stepping out of the Iron Man suit, but Stan has been picking roles that demand he loses himself in them.
His last two films are The Apprentice and A Different Man, two of this year’s most absorbing dramas, and as the leading man in both projects, Stan is fantastic. While awards aren’t everything, he’s sure to be in the conversation for some shiny orbs this year. Whether he ends up picking up and gold for his performances or not, the work he’s doing is incredibly interesting to watch.

Of course, Stan is making these films while still plying the part of Bucky in the MCU. Thunderbolts*, out next year, is the next big Marvel team-up movie for the actor. Meanwhile, he’s been using his MCU status to help get smaller projects off the ground, and now he has another one on his slate.
According to Deadline, Stan will next be teaming up with Romanian Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu to make an untitled film that will go before cameras in 2025. Stan is himself of Romanian heritage, and the project might mark Mungiu’s first English-language film. The filmmaker’s previous works include R.M.N., Beyond The Hills and Graduation. He won the Palme d’Or in 2007 for the thriller, 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days.
With other collaborations in the works with high-profile filmmakers – Paul Feig, Mimi Cave and Justin Kurzel – to name a few, Stan continues to navigate that tricky path between popcorn movie stardom and risk-taking artist.
We’ll let you know more about this one as we hear it.
