Yellowjackets’ Sophie Thatcher has nabbed the title role in the anticipated sci-fi horror Companion, being produced by Barbarian's Zach Cregger.

Zach Cregger rose to prominence with last year’s Barbarian, a horror film that sparked lots of positive word of mouth and saw his stock rocket skywards in the wake of the film’s theatrical release: not bad for a filmmaker who thought his movie was going straight to streaming. Post-Barbarian, Cregger snagged himself a very handsome deal with New Line Cinema to direct and produce films in the style that other horror maestros do at different studios, think Jordan Peele or James Wan.

Whilst Cregger is working on Weapons, an ambitious horror project that he is directing, he’s also overseeing Companion, a sci-fi flick with horror elements (we think). It’s set to be a self-contained story written and directed by Drew Hancock in his feature directorial debut. Now the project has landed its lead actor too.

Sophie Thatcher has been cast as the project’s lead and it all adds to an impressive 2023 for the young actor. Thatcher has already impressed with her small screen performances in Showtime’s Yellowjackets as the younger version of Juliette Lewis’ character in the popular time-skipping drama. Plus, in the world of movies, Thatcher is also riding the wave of plaudits that Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman has earned. The latter, a Stephen King adaptation is in cinemas at the moment and features Thatcher in the lead role. She acquits herself very well indeed as well.

If Companion lands like New Line is hoping it will, Thatcher’s career will enjoy another upwards step as she continues to involve herself with projects that are critically-praised. We’ll bring you more on Companion as we hear it.
