Live Nation Productions is currently working on a comedy movie inspired by Green Day. More on New Year’s Rev below.
American Idiot, Green Day’s smash hit from 2004, is still one of the biggest tunes of the noughties. Given the bandās status, it’s slightly surprising that there hasn’t been a biopic about them yet ā after all, Hollywood loves the genre. Live Nation Productions, meanwhile, is planning something a little different for the Californian rock outfit.
Instead of a traditional biopic, the studio is making a comedy movie “inspired by” the band, as reported by Variety. Titled New Years Rev, the film will follow three friends on a journey to Los Angeles where they presume they’re opening for Green Day. They’re not, which is where the comedy kicks in, I believe.
Here’s a proper logline: “Their roadtrip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.”
The trio will be played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman and Ryan Foust, and they’ll be joined by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo. Lee Kirk is producing, writing and directing New Years Rev, which is currently in production in Oklahoma.
Kirk previously wrote and directed the 2016 film Ordinary World, a comedy drama which starred Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong.
All three members of Green Day are on board as producers for New Years Rev.

“Van days rule,ā said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. āYou will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of. But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known. It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.
Live Nation Productions, part of Live Nation Entertainment, has previously produced such music movies as A Star Is Born, Love Lizzo, Moonage Daydream and the upcoming K-Pops.
“With incredible guidance from Green Day,ā said Ryan Kroft, Live Nation Productions’ head of film and TV, āNew Years Rev tells the story of young artists chasing a dream — long nights, endless miles, and the electrifying rush of the stage fuelling their journey. Brought to life by an incredible cast, it’s a tribute to the magic of live music.”
