Plans are afoot for Nobody 2, with Derek Kolstad at work on a screenplay ā€“ but Universal hasnā€™t given the film the greenlight just yet.

The film that’s turning into the quiet breakout action hit of the year is Nobody, a movie that a year ago we’d suggest few people saw coming. Directed by Illya Naishuller and starring Bob Odenkirk, the modestly-budgeted actioner has been building up box office and word of mouth, with its UK release recently adding more hugely positive reviews to its pile.

Such is the success of the film, in fact, that it looks like it’s about to become a franchise. Naishuller has been chatting to JoBlo as the film gets its disc release in the States, and he’s admitted that he and screenwriter Derek Kolstad are already looking at where to take Odenkirk’s new action hero next.

“There’s plenty of stories that can be told in this world with the character Hutch”, he said. “I know that Derek has begun work on the sequel. Whether it’ll happen, time will tell, but all the necessary seeds have been planted”.

Which means that the ball is now firmly in Universal Pictures’ court as to whether it’ll press the button on a Nobody 2. We’d suggest the chances of it doing so are really rather good. We’d also suggest that Nobody is just the kind of breakout hit that can happen when smaller movies are backed by big movie studios…
