Odeon brought in a small change to its privacy policy this month, that involves customers potentially getting social media posts from studios.

In a transparent update to its terms and conditions, Odeon announced an incoming change at the end of September. This alteration affects its privacy notice, and from the outside looking in, seems to give Odeon the opportunity to make a little bit more cash.

As of earlier this month, Odeon has announced that ‘selected third party film partners (Sony and Warner Bros) will be able to keep you up to date with upcoming film releases via social media platforms (where you are using those platforms).’

The notice also adds that ‘if you are happy to receive updates via social media from our film partners, you don’t need to do anything’.

Meanwhile, those that wish to opt out – and you’re now opted in by default – need to head to their Odeon online member preference centre. You can sign in at Odeon, here. https://www.odeon.co.uk/sign-in/

It’s a small change, and the sharing of data like this does require a private update. In practice, we’d imagine it means you’ll get the occasional targeted post on your social media platform of choice.

That’s guesswork though, but not for the want of trying. Just after the update was revealed, we contacted Odeon’s publicity agency. We asked if Odeon had done a deal to sell certain details of its customers to third parties, and to clarify how this would actually work. This request was acknowledged, and we’ve chased it up. A few weeks on, we don’t have an answer, however.

The vast majority of people won’t mind the change, we’d imagine, and at worst, it’s just another thing to scroll past on the way to what you’re looking for. It’s also, presumably, another useful revenue stream for cinemas, who could use a bit of extra cash.
