Universal’s new monster movie – said to be a film focusing on Dracula’s daughter – will star Scream's Melissa Barrera and is being directed by Radio Silence.

Just before the Hollywood strikes began to bite in May this year, we heard that Radio Silence would be pausing their collective involvement with the Scream franchise to take up the reins of a horror film for Universal. Then it emerged that Melissa Barrera (pictured), the face of the newer Scream movies, would be heading along for the ride too.

As it turned out, the directing trio would eventually leave the Scream franchise entirely and Barrera would follow, although not by choice. When co-star Jenna Ortega also walked away, the whole production hit the skids and is now facing a total ‘creative reset.’

Happily, things seem to be running much more smoothly for Radio Silence and Barrera on their new project, although we still don’t know what it’s called and have only heard unconfirmed tidbits as to what it’s about.

The rumour mill (via Dark Horizons and Instagram) has suggested the following, though: it’s expected that the film will be a standalone monster movie in the style of The Invisible Man or RenfieldWe’ve also heard that the project will centre ‘on a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being Dracula’s daughter. Woe then befalls the kidnappers’.

As you’d imagine it might when you’ve ticked off a vampire with a taste for human blood.

Hopes are high with this one: the creative trio of Radio Silence, consisting of co-directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and producer Chad Villella have put out two well-received Scream films in the space of just 14 months. Not to mention 2019’s fantastic spin on the final girl/slasher movie: Ready Or Not.

By now, Radio Silence have acquired a reputation for quickly making crowd-pleasing female-led slasher horror, and it looks as though this project will be no different.

We also have a release date announced, and it looks like we won’t have to wait too long for the film either: the movie is set to debut on April 19th 2024.

The cast is filled out with appearances from  Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud, Will Catlett and Giancarlo Esposito.

With that in mind, we’d expect to hear more from the project imminently. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
