Sylvester Stallone might be 80, but he also might be considering a return of sorts to the ring with Rocky 7. More here.
It’s the franchise that, every time it looks like it’s retired, seems to come back off the canvas for another slugging match.
The original Rocky movie, written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. As part of the celebrations, there’s even a dramatised movie about the making of the film incoming, entitled I Play Rocky.
Meanwhile, Sylvester Stallone has now written his memoir, and work continues on the next Rocky spin-off movie, Creed IV.
Obviously Rocky IV – not the revised cut – remains the pinnacle of the whole saga, yet Stallone is now actively suggesting again that a full-on Rocky 7 might be on the cards. Again.
Chatting to TV Insider, Stallone says that he’s penned a new film, although there’s a degree of reticence in his comments as to whether it might actually get made.
“I have written another chapter to the Rocky saga, and I think it would be a good opportunity to explore life outside the ring and how the world is changing around him and how his neighbourhood is not like it once was”, he told the outlet, “and he devotes himself to the less fortunate, but I don’t know if it would really be that interesting to most people. So, I just wrote it for myself.”
Stallone, who’s just celebrated his 80th birthday, is also working on a recut of Rocky V, to try and make it better than, well, Rocky V. He’s also toyed with the idea of a Rocky prequel as well, set in the 1960s, but that doesn’t sound like the screenplay that he’s written.
It’s unclear, should Rocky 7 go ahead, whether Stallone would perhaps want to direct (although it’s worth noting he’s been teasing the film since 2019). Presumably he’s interested in playing Rocky Balboa on screen one last time. Although it’d be the fourth time to my reckoning he’d have said he was playing Rocky for the final time.
The likelihood is that, given his strained relationship with Rocky producer Irwin Winkler, that it’s Creed IV that’ll go ahead over another Rocky direct sequel. But still, if I Play Rocky hits box office gold? Well, expect another film somewhere. I’ll start the campaign for I Play Drago as a potential spin-off…
