Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are set to return for Romy & Micheleās High School Reunion 2 ā and thereās been script progress.
The back end of the 1990s saw a pair of high school reunion comedies hit the big screen, both of which remain worth seeking out. On the one hand, there was John Cusack playing a hitman returning for his school reunion in Grosse Pointe Blank. On the other, Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow headlined the wonderfully offbeat Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion. Neither fully ignited the box office, both though found their fans.
Itās been a couple of years since we first heard word of a possible Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2, a nice surprise that sprung up relatively recently. Now, Lisa Kudrow has given a promising update, in which she reckons there’s a working script in place.
She was a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show, and told Barrymore that “we’re as close as we’ve ever been”, adding “there’s a script that’s really good, [written by] Robin Schiff.”
Schiff penned the original film, which in turn was based on her stage play. At the end of last year, Mira Sorvino had confirmed that the plan is to bring pretty much every character of import from the original film for the follow-up, and assuming funding is locked in – and the plan is to shoot Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion 2 by the summer of this year.
That suggests that skates will need to be put on to get things moving. Presumably, it’s Disney putting the financing in, and given the studio has been mining its back catalogue for assorted sequels over the past few years, it doesn’t sound like the biggest hurdle to get the new film the greenlight.
Itās unclear as of yet if original director David Mirkin will be back as well, but answers by the sounds of it are not too far away.
