The Exorcism is heading into cinemas this week, but Joshua John Miller’s horror film was actually shot all the way back in 2019.

It’s a good week to be a fan of Russell Crowe doing exorcisms on the big screen. Joshua John Miller’s The Exorcism, which was previously known as The Georgetown Project, is heading into cinemas this Friday, but it’s been a long time coming.

World Of Reel reports that the film was actually shot in 2019 and has simply been in post-production limbo ever since. It seems that the studio behind the film, Miramax, wasn’t too keen on the film back in 2019, but the pandemic put a stop to reshoots.

Crowe then went on to do The Pope’s Exorcist which enjoyed moderate success, but it was enough to convince Miramax to get everyone back together for reshoots and the film was finally finished in 2024. Miramax still ended up selling The Exorcism to Vertical in the end, World Of Reel notes. Vertigo Releasing is distributing the film in the UK.

The pandemic and last year’s strikes have led to a slightly quieter blockbuster summer so Vertical are pushing ahead with a cinema release for The Exorcism, which was originally planned to be released digitally.

So, technically, The Exorcism should have been the film that made us fall in love with Crowe as a hardcore exorcist and a man of God, but here we are. Now we can only hope that Crowe continues this run of exorcism films and creates a fully fleshed out cinematic universe in which he fights demons.

We’ll leave you with the film’s synopsis: Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe stars as Anthony Miller, a troubled actor who begins to unravel while shooting a supernatural horror film. His estranged daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins), wonders if he’s slipping back into his past addictions or if there’s something more sinister at play.

The Exorcism is in cinemas 21st June.
