Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of the Avatar films and Titanic, has died from cancer. He was just 63.

Some thoroughly rubbish news that came in over the weekend. Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer of films such as Titanic, Avatar and Avatar: The Way Of Water has died. He was just 63 years old. This follows a prolonged struggle with cancer.

A popular figure – not least for being a joy when chatting to people on our side of the fence – the news of his death has come, inevitably, as a huge shock. Long-time creative partner James Cameron led the numerous tributes over the weekend, telling The Hollywood Reporter that “a great producer and a great human being has left us.”

Cameron added to the outlet that “Jon Landau believed in the dream of cinema. He believed that film is the ultimate human art form, and to make films you have to first be human yourself. He will be remembered as much for his vast generosity of spirit as for the movies themselves.”

Jon Landau’s career touched movies far behind James Cameron too. Movies such as Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Dick Tracy, Steven Soderbergh’s Solaris remake, and Dick Tracy.

Landau also had a stint as executive vice president of feature film production at 20th Century Fox in the 1990s.

He won an Oscar for 1997’s Titanic, and was nominated again for the two Avatar movies that have been released to date. His work on the three further Avatar films that James Cameron is working on means his name will be appearing on movie credits for some time to come. But then the work he’s done on movies already released will be seen for a long time to come as well.

Rest in peace, Jon Landau.
