Samara Weaving continues to make sure-footed and diverse project choices, as she signs up for an intriguing new project.
In what feels like a classic case of ‘one for them, one for yourself’, Samara Weaving has signed up to play Marie-Josephine in the newly-announced
Chevalier de Saint-Georges for Searchlight. Weaving, whose breakout performance came in the excellent horror-comedy
Ready Or Not (which is well worth seeking out if you haven’t seen it yet), will next be seen portraying
GI Joe’s iconic crossbow-wielding Scarlett in the upcoming action prequel,
Snake Eyes.
However, she’s then switching from a big-budget action tentpole to an intimate period two-hander for her next project,
Chevalier de Saint-Georges. She will star alongside
Luce's Kelvin Harrison Jr who will play Joseph Bologne, or the Chevalier de Saint-Georges, also known as ‘the Black Mozart.’
The plot follows Bologne, who after being ‘born in the Caribbean, was the illegitimate son of a plantation owner and a slave who was then educated in France and became a fencing master, which served as an entrée into French high society. With his music and operas, he ascended to the upper echelons of Marie Antoinette’s Paris society until a court scandal laid him low… Weaving takes on the role of Marie-Josephine, a woman who yearns for creative fulfilment outside of her empty, loveless marriage and defies her controlling husband to become the voice of Bologne’s opera.’
It all sounds very intriguing, and marks another interesting step in Weaving’s career. The actor has also signed up for Damian Chazelle’s
Babylon too alongside Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. We’ll let you know as we hear more.
